With most kids liking soft drinks and a quarter of all their vitamin C coming from those drinks, Sunny D wanted to create a great tasting soft drink that kids would love, but which had some of the good things they need built in. That means, when they're drinking Sunny D you know they are getting some good things from it. Why do kids need vitamin C? The technical name is Ascorbic Acid and it performs a range of protective functions in the body. It also helps our body to take in iron from other foods like green vegetables, meat and bread and helps 're-condition' another important vitamin, vitamin E, putting it back into the body so it can do its job again. In the UK the most common ways of getting vitamin C are from fruits, vegetables and fruit based soft drinks. A single glass of Sunny D contains all the vitamin C a child needs each day in just one 200ml glass. What do you get vitamin C from? In the UK about 50% of kids get their vitamin C requirement from fruit juice and fruit based soft drinks. Green vegetables, tomatoes and potatoes are also good sources as are citrus fruit like oranges, lemons and grapefruit, as well as fruit juices. Why do kids need vitamin A? Vitamin A helps us to grow and develop. In developing countries, the absence of vitamin A can lead to poor vision in dim light and severe deficiency in vitamin A can lead to permanent eye damage. Vitamin A also helps to repair our bodies when we get injured and it helps give us healthy skin. What do you get vitamin A from? In the UK vegetables are the main source of vitamin A. The next most popular way is through milk and dairy products, meat, cereals and fat spreads, like butter and margarine. It is really important to try and get children to eat fruit and vegetables, but vegetables can be the most commonly left item on a child's plate. Isn't it reassuring to know that Sunny D is a rich source of vitamin A and children love the taste. Vegetables such as carrots, leafy green veg like spinach, sprouts, cabbage and broccoli are all rich in vitamin A too. Why do kids need vitamin B1? Vitamin B1 is also called Thiamin and we need it to turn carbohydrates, from foods such as rice, bread and pasta, into energy. About 50% of a child's energy intake should be made up of carbohydrates. Where do you get vitamin B1 from? Most children's vitamin B1 comes from cereals including, bread and fortified breakfast cereals. Other main sources are vegetables and meat. Sunny Delight is also a rich source of this vitamin. Why do kids need vitamin B6? Vitamin B6 helps build the proteins essential for the normal working of the body including bodily functions, growth and repair. What do you get vitamin B6 from? We get most of our vitamin B6 from cereals but when children won't eat cereals, vegetables, milk or meat which provide most of the daily vitamin B6 intake, at least you can be reassured that with a 200ml glass of Sunny D, you've got another potential source of this important vitamin your children need. |
