April Fools Day

April Fools Day, also known as All Fools' Day, takes place every year on 1st April. It is celebrated all around the world as a day filled with practical jokes and silliness. Be extra cautious before midday on 1st April if you don’t want to end up as the April Fool.

The Sunny D team have rounded up their favourite April Fools hoaxes ever. Would you fall for them?

Spaghetti Really Does Grow on Trees

This hoax was put out on the BBC in 1957 by Panorama. They reported that the spaghetti weevil had been eliminated and spaghetti trees were having a bumper harvest. Footage showed a family in southern Switzerland gathering the spaghetti harvest from spaghetti trees. In the 1950s spaghetti was virtually unknown in the UK and many people believed the story.

Burger King Whopper for Left-Handed Eaters

In 1998 Burger King ran an ad on April Fools Day promoting a new left-handed Whopper hamburger. It was designed for left-handed people with all the condiments rotated by 180 degrees "redistributing the weight of the sandwich so that the bulk of the condiments will skew to the left, thereby reducing the amount of lettuce and other toppings from spilling out the right side of the burger."

These Boot Were Made For Selfies

The Australian shoe marker Miz Mooz launched the ‘selfie shoe’ on April Fools Day 2015. This featured a mobile phone socket in the toe of the shoe to hold your mobile phone. Just put your foot in the air to take a photo – hey presto, the convenience of a selfie stick on your foot!

May The Force Be With You

In 2015 CERN scientists at the Large Hadron Collider announced that they could confirm the existence of The Force. Apparently, “very impressive, this result is,” said a diminutive green spokesperson for the laboratory. "We hope to continue to study the Force, and perhaps use it to open doors with our minds and fly around and stuff.”

I (Don’t) Want to Ride My Bicycle

Last year Google announced that, not content with the self-drive car, they had invented the self-drive bicycle. Simply touch a button on the Google Bike app and your bike will come from wherever it is parked to pick you up and take you home. If only!

Mumsnet on the Move

On 1st April 2012 Mumsnet announced that it was yielding to the inevitable and renaming itself ‘Momsnet’. “We have finally faced up to an unavoidable fact: Mumsnet cannot continue to grow and prosper without reaching out to our American cousins.” Another April Fool announced that Mumsnet was teaming up with Nasa and looking for a mother-and-baby team to send into space. “Tasked with testing the viability of space travel for infants, the successful candidate was needed to conduct zero-gravity experiments to establish the feasibility of catching vomit, tackling a poonami and managing the detritus of weaning without disabling the International Space Station's delicate instruments.”
